Alert after bandstand fire

VISITORS to Page Park are being urged to be extra vigilant after a fire was started near the bandstand the evening before the annual Big Lunch family day.

Staple Hill councillor Ian Boulton noticed the remnants of a fire at the base of the steps to the bandstand when he arrived to help set up for the Big Lunch at 7am on Sunday, June 4.

He said: "It was largely melted plastic which turned out to be a wheelie bin that had been set alight.

"We were able to move the debris and tidy up just in time to able to start the event on schedule. I expect most of the public would have had no idea what we arrived to earlier that day."

Councillor Boulton said police have been working with the community to tackle a number of incidents in the park recently.

"The Friends of Page Park recently raised £90,000 to restore the bandstand and to see how close this fire was to damaging it doesn’t bear thinking about."
