Andy gets in a spin on race day
Published on: 04 Aug 2014
It was a testing month for the local drivers. Mangotsfield racer, Sandy Smith, and James Hurford from Downend both missed out on the July AutoSolo, which had to be cancelled. Phil Oliver from Downend has made plans to use a Mazda MX5 in AutoSolo, Sprint and Hillclimb events with a car purchased on eBay this month. Cost-effective motorsport!
Meanwhile, Andy Laurence from Downend has had four weeks off after competing at Prescott Hillclimb in June. He returned to competition at Clay Pigeon Raceway near Yeovil. Having previously run well at this event, he was hopeful for a good result. The weather reports showed rain was due, but the day dawned bright, sunny and very hot. Andy was immediately on the pace, leading throughout practice. In the afternoon when times count, he put in three times below the existing class record to win the class. It didn’t end well though, as on the last run, a bolt holding on the rear wheel sheared, dropping the car onto the floor and sending Andy into a spin. It’s now a race against time to fix the car before the Dick Mayo Sprint at Castle Combe just six days later!
If you have an interest in motorsport as a spectator, marshal or competitor, then Bristol Motor Club organise cost-effective events in the local area. Speak to club members at the South Glos Show, where you can try your hand at Autotesting by piloting a car around the live action arena against the clock. Alternatively, follow @BristolMC on Twitter or search for Bristol Motor Club on Facebook or your favourite search engine.
