Another amazing night at Downend Folk Club
Published on: 05 Oct 2014
I AM not sure why I was asked to write a review of Friday evening, the sixth Downend Folk Club event….according to my sons I know nothing about music, and in truth they are probably correct!
However, what I do know is that Friday evening was amazing! One member of the sell-out audience wrote on Facebook that it gave them goosebumps…me too!
The evening started with the debut appearance of Downend-based trio Road Not Taken – Anita Dobson with her amazing voice as main vocalist, Ant Miles in his inimitable style on guitar and vocals, and the wonderful Joe Brydon (despite being in the middle of a 82-hour fast for REPRIEVE) on guitar and bouzouki.
Their five songs were performed perfectly, with a good mixture of material using vocals and guitars. I personally had a massive lump in my throat when “My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose” (words by Robbie Burns) was played so sensitively.
After a break, India Electric Company – Cole Stacey (vocals and guitar) and Joseph O’Keefe (mainly fiddle but also guitar and accordion), started their session with “Lhasa”, which was truly amazing. This was made especially so, as they started, unplugged, from the back of the hall and slowly made their way to the stage. The rest of the evening continued with an eclectic mix of their own material plus some well-known pieces. This was all using a variety of instruments and styles.
The capacity audience were kept enthralled all the way through and joined in both with singing and comments from the floor. Most of which I hope were appreciated by Cole and Joseph!
Being a great fan of both Bruce Springsteen and Paul Simon, I particularly enjoyed “I’m On Fire”, “The Only Living Boy In New York” and “Me And Julio Down By The School Yard”, the latter being performed as their encore, at which point I felt the audience applause nearly raised the roof of Frenchay Village Hall as we didn’t want the evening to end!
Fortunately I bought their CD, and I am so glad I did as it will be a lasting memory of a wonderful evening. I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn’t already purchased it.
So a big thank you to all the artists and especially to Ant and all the rest of the Downend Folk Club team for another superb evening. Please keep them coming!!!
