Australian trip inspires new cricket coaching scheme

Downend Cricket Club has announced it will be launching a series of summer holiday coaching workshops and free of charge after school Friday training sessions for local children.
The free Friday sessions, based on the successful Australian Milo initiative, offer the chance for 5 to 8 year olds to try cricket for the first time. The sessions will be run by senior players from the club and ECB Level Two coach Ed Belger, who has recently returned from Melbourne where he spent six months working with the Milo scheme.
The Friday sessions for five to eight year olds will run from 4.30pm to 5.30pm from May 29, with an informal junior coaching session taking place on  May  22 as part of a club quiz night.
Ed, who coaches Downend’s youth sides, wants to develop this system in the UK because he believes it is a great community initiative that allows the cricket club to connect with its local residents. He commented:
“After seeing this initiative work in Australia, I think it’s a great way for kids to get involved in cricket from an early age and have fun playing the sport we all love. It’s also a great opportunity for the community to come together with the club at the centre.”.
Along with the Friday sessions, Downend CC will be running a series of summer coaching workshops for children aged 7 to 12 from 3 to 7 August and 24 to 28 August 2015.
The workshops will also be run by Ed Belger and some of Downend’s first and second team players who will provide specialist coaching for aspiring young local cricketers looking to take their first steps into the sport.
Ed continued:  “This is a great way for kids to learn from senior players about the game, not only about technique but also the mental side of cricket. The coaching workshops will offer something for all young cricketers, from those just starting out to those who are up to county standard.”
The summer workshops will cost £15 for each half day session (mornings for 7 to 9 year olds and afternoons for 10 to 12 year olds) or £70 for the full week.
