Awesome! Downend looks stunning ...
Published on: 01 Aug 2016
I am writing this as we drive through Downend (Dave is driving not me!) and I am constantly in awe this summer of how a little place like Downend and Bromley Heath can look quite so stunning.
Our new six tier planters in particular are spectacular but also all the wooden and tree planters and also the wild flowers dotted around the area. I don't like to blow our own trumpet too much but I do think we have done a pretty good job!
We held a street collection recently as we are always trying to increase the bank balance in order to continue with our floral displays. It was once again great to meet so many people and get such appreciative comments from everyone. Thank you so much to residents (and not always people who live in the immediate area!) for your generous donations and without your support we would not be able to provide such fantastic displays.
Can I also thank the businesses and people of the area who have kindly donated/sponsored our plants this year. If you go to our website www.downendandbromleyheath inbloom.co.uk you can see a list of donors/sponsors.
This month we had a stall at Heathfest again. The weather on the day was beautiful but at the risk of complaining was almost too hot! We took along the new wooden planters which the Men and Their Tools group had made to sell and these caused a great deal of interest and after selling out they were taking orders for ones to make. A great success!
We also had a raffle on the day and many local businesses donated raffle prizes for us so thanks to them for their generosity. It was a little windy in the morning so I was going round being very smug advising people on the use of sand bags to hold down their gazebos - amazing what a bit of personal experience does (last year we nearly took off at our first outing and quickly realised we needed anchoring down!)
A few weeks ago the group were also treated to an afternoon tea and garden viewing at the home of Lyn and Ann. They live in the area and have the most beautiful garden. All the money raised on the day went to D&BH in Bloom which was very kind and we would like to thank them for inviting us. . I did find it very hard to believe that such a beautiful jewel of a garden was in the middle of Downend and the cakes were pretty delicious too!
Our AGM will be coming up soon - Monday September 5 at 7pm at St Augustine's Church so if anyone would like to come along then you will be made most welcome.
Now looking forward to a beautiful warm August where we can maybe sit alfresco in our great cafes, have a natter and appreciate the flowers and the wonderful area that we live in.
