Awesome Girl Moments as BHWI celebrates birthday
Published on: 31 Oct 2014
It is hard to believe that we have reached our first anniversary already. Is it really a year since hundreds of women queued in the cold to join and we hit the news in almost every National newspaper? Well after such a big start to our year we decided to end it in style!
Wow! What else can I say about the first anniversary celebrations at Bromley Heath WI? It was a glamorous occasion – us BHWI ladies love a reason to glam up and add a bit of sparkle! Sitting cabaret style at tables groaning under the weight of delicious food brought by members, we settled in for fun-filled evening.
The evening started with the formal proceedings and the re-election of our fabulous president Sam Burch. With the formal part over it was time for some fun!
Members of the committee had devised the AGM (awesome girl moments) awards. These were awarded to members, nominated by members, who have made a significant contribution to our WI or have excelled in some way. The somewhat tongue in cheek categories included: “culinary delights”, “naughtiest member” and “dedicated follower of fashion”.
The nominations and winners were announced on the night in an Oscars-style ceremony, with winners receiving flower crowns made and donated by member Victoria Veasey of Sweet Lavender Blue Flowers and medallions. “Naughtiest member” Marian (pictured) amused, as well as touched us all with her acceptance speech, which was a witty and emotive tribute to our WI.
The “super sub-group” award went to the choir. If you would like to hear the choir in action, they will be performing at the Bromley Heath Handmade Christmas market in Quakers Road Church hall at 11am on Saturday 6th December.
Our first anniversary raffle was the best yet, with some very desirable prizes that tempted our members to spend, spend, spend on tickets. We had some ecstatic winners, but the biggest winner is our charity South Glos Youth Housing who will benefit from all the money raised.
Committee members led some fun games that culminated in everyone singing along to the Spice Girls. And we all enjoyed a slideshow of photos, as a look back at our fabulous first year.
Comments about the evening from members included:, “I have not had so much fun in ages…”, “Super night ladies! Best one yet!!!”, “Awesome” and “Probably the best WI group in the world!”
Well it has been quite a year and here’s to many more!
