A DOWNEND woman will be flying high when she represents GB at the World Balloon Convention in America next month.

Janine Chrispin is heading out to Denver, Colorado, on March 26 with 10 colleagues from across the country.

Her skills as a balloon artist will be put to the test when the Team GB takes part in a large sculpture competition, giving them just over a day to create a piece of art made up from a staggering 33,000 balloons.

The actual design is being kept under wraps until the competition but Janine says it promises to be spectacular.

The 41-year-old, who runs Downend Balloons alongside her business T-Shirt Printing & More at Cleeve Wood Road, said she can’t wait to take part.

“We’re not allowed to reveal what the sculpture is,” Janine said.

“We have 27 hours to build it and will use 33,000 balloons. It’s very exciting with over 600 delegates from across the world going. We start 9am on the Tuesday morning and we have until 12 on Wednesday lunchtime. We will get some sleep as we are doing it in shifts but I don’t think we’ll get much!

“I think it’s going to blow my mind, to be honest.”

The design of the sculpture has been created by fellow Team GB members Mike and Sara Harris, who live in Rhyl.

Janine, who lives with husband Bill and children Sam, 19 and Joe, 18, started T-Shirt Printing & More in 2004 and established Downend Balloons nearly three years ago.

Janine said: “I started off doing single balloons but kept being asked for more creative designs so I decided to get my certified balloon artist qualification which involved doing three computer-based tests and then a four-hour theory test.”

To prepare for the World Balloon Convention, Janine underwent a four-day intensive training course. She also picked up tips and techniques from top balloon artists when she attended a competition in Slovenia last year.

Janine said: “I’m really excited about meeting different balloon artists from all over the world and people I speak to on a daily basis on Facebook. I’m looking forward to picking up new techniques so I can bring good balloon decor to Bristol.

“I want to show people you can do some really nice things without necessarily spending a lot of money.

“I love balloons. You can light up a room with balloons and change a room’s atmosphere and ambience with them. Balloons make people smile.”
