NO wonder these pupils have their thumbs up - their school has just been given the seal of approval by education watchdog Ofsted.

Inspectors visited Barley Close Community Primary School in Mangotsfield and found it to be Good in each of the six categories used to judge how effective a school is.

They said the headteacher, Jo Williams, has brought about "rapid improvements".

The last time inspectors visited was in December 2015 and inspectors concluded the school requires improvement.

But in less than two years, a different picture has emerged.

The report states: "The headteacher provides effective and determined leadership. Leaders have raised expectations...and have brought about significant improvement since the previous inspection."

The quality of teaching, learning and assessment is also Good with the teaching of reading particularly effective and the teaching of maths improving "significantly" since the last inspection.

Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities are given "high-quality" support to make sure they make good progress.

The behaviour of pupils is good and they are keen to learn and concentrate on tasks set.

The report reveals that 93 per cent of parents who responded to an online survey said their children were happy at the school.

The outcomes for pupils is also Good with the majority of pupils working at the expected standards in reading, writing and maths with an increasing number working at, or working towards, higher standards.

Barley Close's early years provision was judged by inspectors to also be Good with tots at the nursery making good progress before making accelerated progress in reception year.

Inspectors told the school it can improve even further by continuing to strengthen the quality of teaching and ensuring that initiatives for disadvantaged pupils lead to them achieving as well as other pupils nationally.

Headteacher Jo Williams said: "The school has been on an amazing journey over the last 23 months.

"We have focused on the needs of the children and ensured they have received the absolute best care and education at Barley Close.

"The support, hard work and dedication of all the staff, families and wider community have led to the rapid improvement and to the school now being rated Good by Ofsted. The school has so much to offer and this report really showcases that. I look forward to continuing the good work at Barley Close and ensuring that our pupils get the very best start that all children truly deserve."
