Bid to trace key witnesses in serious sexual assault inquiry
Published on: 01 Mar 2016
Avon & Somerset Constabulary are appealing for witnesses after a woman in her forties was seriously sexually assaulted in Mangotsfield in the early hours of Saturday morning (27/2).
The woman had been out in Bristol city centre with a friend on Friday night and was alone at the Shell Garage at the city end of the M32 northbound, when a taxi pulled over at around 1.30am.
There was a man in the back seat of the taxi and the victim was taken to the Burley Grove area of Mangotsfield.
She got out of the taxi and was walking along Burley Grove when she was grabbed by an unknown man from behind and subjected to a serious sexual assault. This incident happened at around 2am.
Det Insp Adam Bunting said: “We’re very keen to trace the taxi driver who picked up to the woman at the Shell petrol station, known locally as Silvey’s. We believe he may have been Asian.
“There was a male passenger already in the back seat of taxi, who was white.
“When the victim got out of the taxi in Mangotsfield, she walked a short way down the road before being grabbed from behind and attacked.
“She’s been through a terrible ordeal and has received help from specially-trained staff at The Bridge Sexual Assault Referral Centre. They’ve given her access to whatever help and support she needs.
“If you were the taxi driver or passenger, or if you saw or heard anything suspicious in the Burley Grove area of Mangotsfield in the early hours of Saturday morning, please call us.”
