Book Nook is a new chapter

The children at Blackhorse Primary School were excited earlier this month to see a brightly coloured caravan trundle on to the playground.

The caravan, bought cheaply on eBay and then converted for the school by The Green Play Project, is the school’s latest initiative to encourage children to curl up with a good book.

The caravan has been converted to provide the children with anoutdoo r library (dubbed the ‘Book Nook’) where the children can relax with a book or play a game of chess with their friends during breaktimes.

Headteacher, Simon Botten, said: “We wanted to provide a space where we could encourage a love of reading for pleasure. The PTA have been supporting this initiative and we wanted to do something a little out of the ordinary to spark children’s imaginations. The caravan idea seemed like a cheap and exciting way to provide this.”

Although the project is not yet fully complete – a decked and astro-turfed seating area is to be built in front of the caravan to provide additional outside seating and a performance stage – the children are enjoying the opportunity to explore reading in a slightly unusual setting.

Sarah, five, said “I like the Book Nook. I can see my friends and read a book at the same time.”

Stocked with books and games donated by the children themselves, the classes take turns to use the caravan and it is proving a hit with children of all ages.
