Bridge Community Church joins forces with CAP

A TEAM from Bridge Community Church has joined forces with the debt counselling charity, Christians Against Poverty (CAP) to help Staple Hill residents who are struggling with debt.

It is running a free money management course, which aims to show people how to take charge of their finances at Our Place Community Flat in Nelson Road, close to the high street.

Course organiser, Corrie Macdonald-Wallis said: “We were really keen to hold the course somewhere that was right within the heart of the community as we all live within the local area and are doing this with local people in mind. The course is for anyone who would like to get better control of their money – it’s easy to get to the end of the month and wonder where the money’s gone and how to make it stretch further. What the course does is to help you to get a handle on what you’re spending and where, and how to plan ahead for upcoming expenses, which is especially useful with Christmas approaching!”

Co-organiser, Kyle Macdonald-Wallis, added: “We look at building and balancing a budget, with lots of tips, strategies and online tools to help stick to your plan. We’ll also talk about debt and how best to tackle it. We can even refer you to local CAP debt help specialists if you feel you need extra support.

“We hope the course will be a friendly and safe place to talk about what might be a stressful issue, but where people can make really positive steps in taking control of their money.”

Lou Button, one of the course leaders, was motivated to get involved in running the course from her own experience with money. She said: “Having been there myself, I empathise with people who have money concerns. I completely understand how the worry can consume people. So I really want to run this course to help others who are facing similar issues to those that I did.”

The first session was on September 30 and the other two are on October 7 and 14, starting at 7pm.
