Brunelcare acquires Woodland Court retirement village

A RETIREMENT village in Downend has been acquired by Brunelcare, which runs many housing schemes and care services in Bristol and South Gloucestershire.

The previous owners of Woodland Court off Overndale Road, the Care Village Group, went into administration in June 2011, leaving the residents and staff with an uncertain future.

Brunelcare says its top priority has been to retain all 27 members of staff to ensure that services are maintained, while minimising any disruption to the residents of the 57 apartments.

Community services manager, Michelle Mansfield, who is overseeing the transition of ownership for the charity, said: “All the residents and staff have been so supportive of us taking over and we continue to work with them closely to keep the homely and community feel here at Woodland Court.

“Taking over the running of the village is allowing us to build on our current care and support skills we offer in the community.”

Woodland Court comprises one and two bedroom retirement apartments and boasts a variety of social and leisure facilities on site. These include a restaurant, bar, hair salon, games room and visiting doctor’s surgery, with domiciliary care and support services available on assessment.

Ms Mansfield said: “The community here allows residents to tap into the facilities and care services as and when they need them, helping them to live out their lives at home.”

Donna Bayley, who has worked at Woodland Court as a service provider for over ten years, spoke on behalf of the residents and staff: “It has been a hard couple of years with a lot of uncertainty, but we are feeling more secure now and the residents are a lot happier.

“We know things will be done now and we all like being consulted on any changes that are planned to take place. It is still early days but the feeling is more upbeat and we are all hopeful as we move forward.”

This is the first acquisition of its kind for the Bristol-based charity and sees a significant investment to develop a new branch of assisted living. Woodland Court compliments the housing opportunities Brunelcare already offer, including five independent living schemes and 23 sheltered housing schemes across Bristol. This is in addition to the 1,700 hours of community care and support services Brunelcare deliver in Bristol and South Gloucester every week.
