Dancers help the homeless

ZUMBA instructors Sam King and Karen Davis devoted their last class of 2015 to raising money for Bristol’s homelessness charity, St Mungo’s Broadwalk.
Their inspiration came from the kind-hearted women who attend their classes in Mangotsfield and Downend, who had been collecting supplies for the charity in the run-up to Christmas.
Eager to bring the community together for this vital cause, the two friends invited the Senior Lyrical Dance Group from Vicky’s Dance Academy, Mangotsfield, to start the evening by performing their award winning dance Homeless.
Vicky Moody, who runs V-Dance Academy, was thrilled that the girls could participate in such an evening and to be able to perform the routine they will be staging at the O2 Arena in 2016.
Mangotsfield School student Hope Vardakis, who attends the twice-weekly Zumba class, has been helping her mum Helen Morgan in collecting donations for the charity and was thankful to her school for joining in the community spirit by donating their hall for free.
Sam said: “The ladies who attend our classes are wonderful. It is a complete joy to spend time with them and they have been 100 per cent behind us in supporting this vital cause.
Karen added: “Sadly, at this time of year the need is bigger than ever and if everybody pulls together we can do something to help bring some comfort to those who desperately need help here in Bristol. We would like to say a huge thank you to every person who supported us that evening.”
Sam and Karen, who both live in Downend with their families, have been running their classes since September 2015. During the day Sam is a youth support worker and Karen works for Cancer Research UK. Their classes are built on friendship, fun and fitness and they welcome everyone.
Sam and Karen run their ‘Zumba Fresh’ classes at Downend School Main Hall, 7-8pm on Monday evenings and also Mangotsfield School Main Hall, 7-8pm on Thursday evenings. Classes for 2016 start on Monday January 4. You can find them on Facebook ‘Karen Sam Zumba’.
