Expect further delays

CLOSURE of the M32 for a weekend and further works on the  A4174 Avon Ring Road will bring more misery for drivers in the Downend area this month.
The motorway is being shut between June 10 and 13 so that a bridge can be installed for the new bus-only junction at Hambrook.
This is part of the £200m MetroBus project, which aims to provide quicker travel from Emersons Green, UWE, Bradley Stoke and Cribbs Causeway to the city centre and beyond from next year.
The proposed closure of Stoke Lane to northbound traffic for a year as part of the same scheme was due to begin on May 23 but was delayed on the orders of Bristol's new cabinet member for transport Mark Bradshaw.
As Downend Voice went to print, meetings were taking place to look again at the modelling of the impact shutting the road might have on traffic around the area. Campaigners said MetroBus, which includes Bristol and South Gloucestershire Council and their contractors, was on the basis of hundreds of drivers using Hambrook Lane – but this road is shut because of other MetroBus works.
The works on the ring road between Hambrook and Bromley Heath on June 4 and 5 are to create narrow lanes, which will be in use with a 30mph limit until October so that a bus lane can be constructed. The narrow lanes will enable the A 4174 to remain open throughout the work.
A MetroBus spokesman said: “Bristol City Council, South Gloucestershire Council and MetroBus have worked with Highways England to minimise disruption resulting from this work so that it can be delivered as quickly and efficiently as possible.
“The significant improvements MetroBus is making to public transport will benefit everyone across our region - bus passengers will benefit from faster and more reliable journey times.
“As buses become more reliable more people will be willing to leave their car at home which eases traffic congestion for everyone - including other road users such as motorists, the emergency services and cyclists.”
