Fizz and sparkle at the Bishop’s Palace Diane Flowers from Bromley Heath WI tells us about their charity ball
Published on: 02 May 2016
AFTER walking up the red carpet (yes really!) in their glamorous finery, guests were welcomed with a sparkling glass of bucks fizz as they arrived at BHWI’s first ever charity ball. Apart from having lots of fun, the aim of the evening was to raise as much money as possible for local charity Mothers for Mothers, who provide support for women suffering from post-natal depression.
The ball was inspired and largely organised by member Jane Knight, who sadly passed away this year. We wanted it to be a fabulous occasion in Jane’s memory, something she would have been proud of and we know Jane would have wanted us all to have a fabulous time – we didn’t let her down!
The venue was the historic Bishop’s Palace, a listed building dating from around 1725, now part of Colston’s School in Stapleton. The food was fabulous and we danced and sang (yes those Bromley Heath Choir ladies were at it again!) the night away to the disco and the jazzy strains of the Park Row Five Jazz Ensemble. At one point I looked up to see the tables almost completely empty and wondered where everyone was and then I realised that nearly everyone was on the dancefloor! BHWI and their partners and friends certainly know how to party! It was a fabulous night finished off perfectly with a rousing chorus of the song Thank you for the Music from the ball-goers, accompanied by Abba from the lovely DJ.
We don’t yet have the final total for the money raised from the ball, but we would like to thank all the companies and individuals who made generous donations to the cause and helped make the event a success.
We would also like to thank the BHWI Ball Organising Committee, Julia Alden-Pierce, Adele Brown, Inês Condinho, Jane Eaton, Caroline King and Margaret Hanwell for all their hard work - they are amazing, talented, hard-working ladies!
