Good start for local drivers

AFTER a winter anticipation, James Hurford and Phil Oliver from Downend joined up with Sandy Smith from Mangotsfield to convoy over to Chepstow for the first round of the Vincenzo & Son Bristol MX5 Challenge. The new venue for this year provided some high speed thrills and after signing on and walking the course, the trio got down to the business of setting blistering times.
James was quickest off the blocks, getting straight into 3rd place after the first test, whilst Phil made a mistake on the last run, losing 2.5 seconds, dropping him into 4th place. Sandy wasn’t far behind in 5th. On the second test, James was very quick, setting the 2nd quickest time and slipping into 2nd place. Sandy found some real pace just 0.6 seconds behind James, whilst Phil was just behind, bringing him up to 3rd place.
The final test was the decider and Phil had a point to prove. He pulled back all the time lost on the previous two tests to pass James, but both were shadowed by the performance of Garry Hendy from Fishponds who set a blistering time to come home 2nd. Phil followed home in third with James in 4th and Sandy in 5th. Quite an impressive start for the drivers from BS16!
All three of the drivers will be back behind the wheel at the Great Western Sprint, which will have happened by the time you read this. They have also entered the third round of the championship at Llandow Circuit near Cardiff on May 9.
You can watch them compete as a spectator (there is no charge) or from the closest possible point as a marshal (you’ll get a free lunch). Search for Bristol Motor Club to find out more information.
