Green light for school
THE expansion of Mangotsfield Primary School on to a site on the other side of Emersons Green Lane has been given the go-ahead in spite of safety concerns.
A new seven-classroom block will be build on the main site to allow the school to accommodate up to 630 children in response to increasing demand for places for primary-aged children.
The staff car park will be moved to the new site, which will also house a sports field.
Governors and the police had expressed worries about security because of the lane, which is a public right of way used by walkers, riders and cyclists, running through the site.
But it was agreed that any attempt to close or divert the path would delay the much-needed extension to the school and might mean some parents who live nearby having to drive their children to schools elsewhere.
South Gloucestershire Council's development control (east) committee voted to approve the plans, which include a temporary two-classroom block as well as the permanent two-storey extension.
