How Kath lived on just £1 a day

Looking more like a glamorous celebrity than some who could live on a pound a day, Kath stepped onto the podium to a huge round of applause. The hall, of Bromley Heath Junior School, was packed with ladies eager to pick up some tips on how to live frugally and we weren’t disappointed.

We sat enthralled by Kath’s tales of her escapades during that year, including how she acquired a bicycle for free after hers was stolen and her free all-inclusive holiday, where she met her future husband.

We were all amused by her stories of persuading friends to come to art exhibitions and public lectures on obscure subjects, just so that she could gorge herself on the free wine and canapés on offer.

It was also clear that Kath didn’t let living on a pound a day stop her from having fun.

Of course the question on everyone’s lips was: “What happened after the year was up?”  Well Kath no longer survives on a pound a day, but continues to live frugally and in a way that is respectful of our environment but still has lots of room for fun. What an amazing lady! If you would like to know more you can find out at: or read Kath’s book: How I lived a year on just a pound a day.

On a more serious note, members were asked to think about local charities that they would like to nominate to be the group’s chosen charity for the year. It will be difficult to choose with so many very worthwhile local good causes to choose from.

The meeting ended with the raffle. Keeping with the frugal theme of the meeting, the raffle prizes were all either recycled Christmas gifts, home-made or home grown in the case of an enormous pumpkin which raised a few smiles, as did the Daniel O’Donnell calendar which was left behind at the end of the night!! Another chance to win it next time!

Next month we are looking forward to learning how to give a relaxing massage, as well as hearing news of what the sub-groups have been getting up to!
