Is Father Christmas being Frozen out by Elsa?

Published on: 03 Dec 2015

IT seems that a blue dress is almost as vital as a red suit and white beard for Christmas festivities in the Downend area this year.
Elsa from Frozen is popping up all over the place to turn on tree lights. Let’s hope she knows the words to all the carols!
The shopping season is about to begin. Here are some of the places you might find Elsa (and Santa!).

CHRISTMAS IN DOWNEND
November 27
4-7.30pm
The annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in the centre of Downend is hosted by the parish  council.
The event features choirs from local schools, cheerleaders and dancers, the Downend School Concert Band, followed by the Bromley Heath WI Choir. Elsa from Frozen will switch on the lights on the Christmas tree at 6.30pm.
Balloon modelling, face painting, children’s fairground rides, nativity dress up and a treasure hunt in the shops are among the activities as well as  mince pies for all. And, of course, Father Christmas will be there too.
For safety reasons, it is best to park in the Co-op car park and walk across the main road to get to the festivities. The road will be closed for vehicles from 3-8.30pm.

CLEEVE WOOD SHOPS
November 28
Noon to 4pm
Traders have again organised a host of charity fund-raising activities to launch their Christmas season. Entertainment will include fairground rides, stilt walkers,  live music, a barbecue and hog roast and a raffle. A Christmas fancy dress competition will be held for children – but there’s nothing to stop adults dressing up too! Expect to see Santa and Elsa.

28 NORTHCOTE ROAD, MANGOTSFIELD
December 1
6.30-8.30pm
Jason Edgecombe has organised a Christmas lights event to raise money for Cancer Research. Elsa, Olaf and the Minions will be there as well as a hot food van, model hot air balloons on the village green, children’s actitivies and a craft stall. The lights will be switched on at 7.30pm.

CHRISTMAS ON THE HILL
December 5
12.30-4pm
The annual event in Staple Hill to mark the start of the festive season promises to be action packed this year.
The fun starts in Fountain Square and includes a grand parade and the switching on of the Christmas tree lights by Elsa from Frozen.
Father Christmas will be there, not to mention donkeys, dancers, bands, majorettes and singers. The full programme can be found on pages 26-29.

EMERSONS GREEN
December 5
4.30-8pm
Emersons Green Town Council is organising a Christmas event in the retail park.
It is anticipated that this will be a larger event than in previous years. Various groups will be involved and it is expected that these will include RedX Dance, Sounds Delighted Choir, Barley Close school choir and a disc jockey. It is understood  that Father Christmas will be making a special appearance.
