Looking forward to spring colour

VOLUNTEERS have been out in force planting bulbs around Downend and Bromley Heath ready for some glorious colour next spring.

Downend in Bloom was initiated by parish councillor Chris Boulton and now has a team of friends and has just launched a website.

The group is seeking funding to expand its activities and new volunteers are always welcome.

One of the group has written a poem about their work.

Three girls from the 25th Kingswood (Christchurch, Downend) Guides joined the bulb-planters one Saturday as part of their work towards the Baden Powell Award.

This award is the highest available to Guides and involves the girls in various activities which they select themselves from a list of options.

As part of their challenge Julia, Elizabeth and Erin choose to plant bulbs in their local community.

Seasons 'In bloom'

Autumn leaves are starting to fall

Summer is bowing out.

Wind and rain are now making

their call,

Blowing those leaves about.

Downend and Bromley Heath are

saying goodbye

To the fabulous fashion show of

flowers,

Which has graced the planters,

cheered passers-by

And given enjoyment for many,

many hours.

Spring bulbs planted, soon all will

be done,

As we await Winter’s benevolent

gloom.

Yet in a few months, colour will

cheer once again,

Thanks to Downend and Bromley

Heath ‘In Bloom’.
