Masters of maths already

CHILDREN from Mangotsfield CofE Primary impressed teachers from around the area when they took part in showcase maths lessons with teachers from Shanghai.
Headteacher Marion Borland said she was very proud of the way the students had responded to being in the spotlight, which included three sets of television cameras filming Year 2 pupils during their lesson with Melody, one of the Chinese teachers.
Melody and her colleague Lin visited the Nexus Teaching School Alliance for two weeks as part of an exchange arranged through the Boolean Maths Hub. It follows a first visit to the Cabot Learning Federation last year.
They worked with Mangotsfield primary's maths specialist Abby Watkins, who was one of a party of 70 expert maths teachers from schools across the country who went on a research visit to Shanghai schools in November last year.
The aim of the programme is to help teachers in English schools introduce mastery approaches to teaching maths, which have proved successful in Shanghai, in their schools.
Melody told the Voice that she had enjoyed working at Mangotsfield and learning from the pupils and staff.
"The children are very kind and polite," she said.
