Memories of VE Day in Downend
Published on: 08 Jun 2015
THIS evocative picture of a street party in Downend on VE Day was sent to us by Terry Scott-Finnigan, who lives in London.
He recalls the occasion on May 8, 2015, just before his fifth birthday.
“I was born and lived at 201 Badminton Road and the adjoining houses 203 and 205 were directly adjacent to the wide green where the party was held,” he said. “Note the nurses in attendance ...maybe it was a requirement.
“The party was sited in Badminton Road between Sandringham Avenue and Four Acre Road closer to the latter.”
Terry, who was known as Terry Finnigan back then, sent us the photo to mark the 70th anniversary of D-Day, and said he would like it to go in a local archive. “I thought [the picture] may give some pleasure and interest to local people especially if they recognise themselves or their family some 70 years ago,” he said.
