A FORMER Commander of British Forces in Afghanistan visited Mangotsfield School to hold a series of writing workshops.

Colonel Richard Kemp, who completed 14 tours of duty around the globe, became an author and campaigner after he retired from the army.

He co-wrote a book called Attack State Red, which aimed to put readers into the boots of a fighting soldier.

Col Kemp spoke to Year 11 boys about his career and his views on issues relating to war and conflict before supporting the students in some extended writing practice for their GCSE English language exams.

Head teacher David Spence said the visit had been inspirational for the students.
