Monte Carlo or Bust for Round Tablers
Published on: 08 Jun 2015
WATCH out for the Wacky Racers – two unusual vehicles are setting off from Downend on June 4 on a 1,600-mile journey.
The cars will be driven by six members of Downend Round Table who are taking part in the Monte Carlo or Bust banger rally challenge.
Those taking part must spend no more than £300 a car and it is suggested they have “a strong sense of excitement and adventure … and a penchant for fancy dress.”
The six Round Tablers – Mark Dotchin, James Monteith, Jon Payne, Danny Street, Jordan Eveleigh and Steve Lansdale - qualify in all respects.
“It is a complete first for all of us,” said Steve. “It seemed like a good idea at the time. It is something we will look back on with fond memories. I’m sure we will come back with lots of stories to tell – and we will be raising a fair bit for charity too.”
The teams have covered one of their cars, a Citroen Picasso, in blackboard paint so they can post messages on it during their four-day trip, while the other, a Rover 618, is kitted out as a Batmobile “in the loosest possible sense”.
The Round Tablers have had some sponsorship and mechanic support from Pearce Bros. They travel first to Belgium, to register for the route, which takes them through Germany, Luxemburg, Switzerland and Italy to Monaco and France, completing various challenges along the way.
“There’s some doubt that we will even make it to Dover, but we are hopeful of at least getting to the Alps,” said Steve.
The challenge is creating plenty of interest and the teams plan to post live updates of their progress via Facebook and Twitter.
The group have already raised more than £1,000 and are encouraging supporters to donate via https://www.justgiving.com/Downend-Round-Table/
