New event planned for older people

A FRESH initiative to bring older people together and encourage them to get involved in their community is being planned in Downend.
Two years ago, the Downend Connect event at Badminton Gardens was a great success and led to scores of residents learning computer skills and joining a knitting group.
Now another Downend Connect session is planned for September as part of South Gloucestershire's Discover Festival.
It will take place in Downend Library on September 15, supported by Downend Voice and Downend & Bromley Heath Parish Council as well as South Gloucestershire Council.
Parish councillor Martyn Poole is keen to hear from anyone who has ideas for the event, at which organisations who work with retired people will exhibit. He sees the event as “a bit like a university freshers' fair but for older people”.
“The last event went so well, introducing lonely people to meet others, so we are really keen to do it again. We are holding it in a different part of the parish this time, but everyone is welcome,” he said.
As before, people who attend will be encouraged to put forward their ideas for activities in which they might like to participate. If enough are interested, the parish council will do its best to provide what is requested. “We are holding this in September so if new groups are required we should be able to set them up by Christmas,” said Councillor Poole.
At Downend Voice, we already list many events for people of all ages in our What's On pages. But if there is something you'd like to have a go at, which you don't see there, get in touch with Councillor Poole or the parish clerk Angela Hocking.
And remember to look out for further information about this event in the August and September editions of the Voice.
