Obituary: Ken Helps, 1932-2016

KEN Helps was Bristol born and bred. He started life at 130 Thingwall Park, Fishponds, gained a scholarship to attend Cotham Grammar School, leaving to work for ES&A Robinsons printing company. He started as a junior clerk and after several promotions during his 47 years with the company, he became purchasing director at the factory in Filwood Road, Fishponds.

A keen sportsman, Ken played league hockey, table tennis and bowls and was an avid Bath Rugby supporter.

He served the community as a governor at Speedwell School and was known locally as a lay preacher. Ken was a deacon and elder at Soundwell Baptist Church for many years before becoming the senior elder for 30 years at Hillfields Park Baptist Church.

The proudest moment of his life was meeting the Queen at a Buckingham Palace garden party.

Ken leaves his widow Jill, to whom he was married for 61 years, children Adrian and Carole, five grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.
