Predators relaunch with new coach Becky

YOUNGSTERS from Downend and Mangotsfield are looking forward to another successful season with the Predators cheerleaders.

The group performed at the family fun day at Page Park last month and are due at Mangotsfield Festival on June 8.

It has about 75 members, male and female, ranging in age from three to 26. They train at Fromeside gym in Winterbourne and the Greenway Centre in Southmead.

The group used to be known as the Crusaders but relaunched with a new coach, Becky Hopton, after the former coach moved to America.

Predators runs five teams; cubs, are the youngest, followed by huskies and leopards, then the older teams are named venom and vipers.

Participants perform routines that link cheerleading, dance and gymnastics – and include no pom poms!

As well as appearing at events throughout the summer, the teams take part in competitions around the country. Parents and friends help with fund-raising.

Mum Jen Clark, from Mangotsfield, whose daughter Bel, 15, a Downend School pupil, is in the leopards team, said; “They really enjoy it. Cheerleading is the fastest growing sport in the UK.”
