KINDHEARTED people in Downend have thrown their weight behind a huge fundraiser to support disadvantaged children.

Crowds flocked to the Horseshoe pub to watch and take part in the Pub Olympics, part of a series of events to raise money to buy a mini bus for children's charity Variety.

Seventeen teams of four, including landlord and landlady John and Deb Page, took part in the various events which included darts, shove ha'penny and skittles.

There was also a barbecue, raffle, auction and games such as a lucky dip, name the bear and roll the pound.

The event was organised by  local ladies Tracy Hook, Julie Houselander and Jan St George who were supported by John and Deb.

Keeping the afternoon together was Horseshoe regular and compère for the day, James McNamara.

Also in attendance was Downend resident Dave Hook, who is well known in the area for his Rod Stewart tribute act.

Dave has raised more than £40,000 for Variety in the past 10 years and was recently honoured for his work when he received a special Ambassador's award from the charity.

Nearly £3,000 was raised which included a generous donation of £300 from Andy Hunt of Swinton Insurance in Kingswood.

The winning team, who were presented with trophies and champagne, were called Norfolk and Chance and included Steve Burchill, John Knowles, John Page and Craig Burchill.

Second prize went to team Tarmac who received wine and novelty trophies with third place going to team Nothing who received beer and novelty medals.

Tracy Hook, one of the organisers, said: "The pub Olympic event was a great success and an incredible £2,872 was raised.

"Our  team of volunteers and helpers of Variety and The Horseshoe staff worked constantly. They were amazing and the event would not of been possible without the support of everyone who came along, participated  and gave so generously. A huge thank you to you all."

The next Variety event to raise funds for the bus is being organised by Andy Hunt. Andy and his team are arranging a sponsored walk from the Kingswood branch of Swinton Insurance to their Bedminster branch on Thursday August 4. Everyone is welcome to support, donate/sponsor or take part in the walk.
