Pupils have smashing time at Wimbledon

SPORTY youngsters from a Downend school were served up a treat when they were lucky enough to get tickets for this year’s Wimbledon.
Children from the Year 3 and 4 tennis club at St Augustine of Canterbury Catholic Primary School went to day five of the tennis championships.
Accompanied by their coaches Mrs Gibbs and Mrs Maddern, the pupils headed for court three and watched Nick Kyrgios v Milos Raonic and Venus Williams v Aleksandra Krunic.
They cooled down from the sun by going in the shaded children’s area where they practised their different tennis skills against other children, tennis coaches and electronic games.
Their teachers were particularly proud when other spectators commented on how well behaved they were.
Philippa Maddern, tennis coach at St Augustine’s, said: “It was a really special school trip and we had a truly fabulous day. The children were so good and really enjoyed themselves.
“We saw some great matches and big name players like Venus Williams and Nick Kyrious. We were privileged to get tickets and really made the most of our day.”
One excited Year 3 student said: “We had a great day. I especially loved seeing Venus Williams win on court two.”
