QUICK action by residents and South Gloucestershire Council prevented damage to protected trees off Cleeve Hill last month.
A neighbour noticed that workers were cutting back branches in a lane off Cleeve Hill and called the council.
Officers visited the site and halted the work, pointing out that the trees were subject to preservation orders.
A council spokeswoman confirmed that officers had prevented any further trees being cut back and said the authority was taking legal advice.
The lane leads to a site that is thought to have been sold for development.
