Santa's busy elsewhere

DOWNEND will have a Christmas tree with lights in 2016 - but there will be no official switch-on ceremony.

The event, which has attracted large crowds in recent years, is not taking place because of a shortage of funds and support.

Christmas in Downend used to be hosted by Downend & Bromley Heath Parish Council but it decided earlier this year that it could not fund the event out of council tax at a time of austerity.

Downend Business Community had hoped to help stage a scaled-down event, as reported in October's Downend Voice, but this has not proved possible.

Chairman Andy Mason toldus last month that because there were no High Street traders n the DBC, the popular treasure hunt and late-night shop opening would not take place this year.
