Santa's Sleigh is coming your way - be very good!

Published on: 24 Nov 2016

OH what a night! After a year of planning, Downend saw huge crowds flock to the area's biggest and best fireworks show to raise over £26,000 for local good causes including our title charity MNDa.

In the run-up to event, our media team (James) handled hundreds of queries via email, Twitter and Facebook. Managing to maintain his composure, he made his mum proud when he was interviewed on ITV Westcountry news.

With clear skies overhead, over 10,000 people flocked through the gates for a great evening of charity fireworks. Led by Radio Bristol, the crowds were entertained by Circus Uncertainty and a number of live bands before the main launch.

Our launch partner Skyburst excelled themselves once again, prompting oohs and aahs aplenty. We  couldn’t manage the event without our partners and supporting organisations.

Wessex Garages and Mama Bear’s have been long-term sponsors of the event; having them onboard means we can order a bigger display knowing we aren’t completely reliant on the gate money.

The local scouts and guides had a great time selling glow in the darks to excited youngsters, whilst our 41 clubs (it's where you go when you are too old for Round Table) and Rotary manned the gates, dealing with the concept of e-tickets with ease.

Less than 24 months ago, there were six people in Downend Round Table and the future of the event and the club was at risk. We now have over 15 members with more waiting to join and the average age has plummeted to less than 25. Whilst we raise money through great events like Fireworks, most of our focus is on having fun, this year has included korfball, zorb football, rock climbing. Next, another attempt at Monte Carlo or Bust is planned along with the following events :

    Dec 1st - Ice Skating

    Dec 15th - Christmas Meal

Dec 31st - New Years Eve Party

    Jan 5th - Badminton

    Feb 2nd - Laser Tag

March 2nd - Dry Slope Skiing

Our Facebook page is regularly updated and you can contact us there for any more info.

However, fireworks is now over, we’ve had the fun and now we must move on to Downend Round Table’s most serious commitment. Helping the big fella visit the streets of South Glos to see all the girls and boys before Christmas Day. The Downend Round Table Santa Sleigh will be out every weekend in December, along with some week nights as we get closer to Christmas.

Again we need to thank Wessex Garages for their continued support, as Rudolph is limbering up for the big night; they lend us one of their top of the range Navaras to help Santa on his way.

Our schedule is on our website @ http://www.downendrt.co.uk along with the upgraded Santa Tracker. You can come and find us by either following us on GPS (via website) or listening for our kicking Christmas beats.

And remember, there’s two ways to guarantee the Downend Round Table Santa Sleigh will visit your street:

    Be VERY VERY GOOD.
