Scheme offers discounts for carers
Published on: 26 Aug 2016
THREE businesses in Downend have so far signed up to a scheme offering discounts and benefits to carers.
Webb's Flowers, Cleeve Wood Pharmacy and Georgi Barbershop - all in Cleeve Wood Road - are offering reductions on their products and services in recognition of the sterling work carers do looking after friends or relatives.
The special offers are available to carers who carry a Carers Emergency Card, which can be used if a carer has an accident or emergency, ensuring the person they look after continues to receive the vital care they need.
Carers can take advantage of 15 per cent off flowers and plants at Webb's Flowers, 10 per cent off all items, excluding prescriptions and the £1 line range, at Cleeve Wood Pharmacy and £5 off gents' cuts at Georgi Barbershop.
The Carers Emergency Card Benefits Scheme is run by the Carers Support Centre Bristol and South Gloucestershire, a charity based at the Vassall Centre in Fishponds.
Carers can use their card to receive benefits in a range of local businesses throughout Bristol and South Gloucestershire. The scheme includes days out at places like Bristol Zoo and Westonbirt Arboretum as well as relaxation therapies, including those on offer at Carpe Diem in Staple Hill.
More than 150 businesses have already signed up with more and more joining. Businesses can support carers and show they are ‘carer-friendly’ by joining the scheme.
Around 4,000 carers in Bristol and South Gloucestershire carry the free emergency card, which was introduced in 2007.
How the card works:
Carers carry their Carers Emergency Card with them at all times
Shops, restaurants and organisations decide what discounts they want to offer
When a business signs up to the scheme they are given a window display sticker to identify them as part of the scheme
Carer Julia Jeffries said: "I can treat myself when I have an occasional day out. The scheme also makes carers feel valued."
Keith Sinclair, chief executive of Carers Support Centre, said: "We are inviting businesses to support carers and show they are ‘carer-friendly’ by joining the Carers Emergency Card Benefits Scheme.
"Caring is an issue that touches many people. Locally, two out of five people will become carers at some time in their lives. There are 68,000 carers in Bristol and South Gloucestershire and the time and care they give saves local health and social care services a staggering £1.19 billion every year."
