School 20mph zones bid

MOVES are under way to introduce 20mph speed limits around several more schools in the Downend area.

South Gloucestershire Council made a resolution in September 2013 to ensure that, as far as practicable, all schools are covered by a 20mph speed limit. This approach is in line with guidance from the Government, which is encouraging local authorities to introduce 20mph speed limits or zones in residential areas being used by people on foot or bicycle.

Consultation has taken place over proposed speed reductions from 30mph to 20mph around St Augustine of Canterbury and Stanbridge primaries, Christ Church infant and junior and Downend School.

The roads affected near St Augustine’s are: Boscombe Crescent, Bowden Place, Garnett Place, Kimberley Close, Lulworth Crescent, Lytchet Drive, Meadow Close and The Meads.

The roads near Stanbridge and Downend facing limits are: Graham Road, Northcote Road, Stanbridge Road, Stockwell Close, Westerleigh Close, Westerleigh Road and Woodhall Close.

The scheme for Christ Church includes Berkeley Road, Christchurch Avenue, Christchurch Lane, Church View, Downend Park Road, Fern Road, Haynes Lane, Nelson Road, North Street, Pendennis Avenue, Pendennis Road, Pleasant Road, Shrubbery Road, Tyler’s Lane, Victoria Street and Wrenbert Road.

Christ Church Infants told parents in a newsletter: “As a school we fully support this proposal in order to increase safety for our families as they make the journey to and from school. Should you wish to make any further suggestions regarding further safety measures to be considered this could be the place to have your ideas heard.”

The school has also urged parents to make sure they avoid parking on yellow zigzags and on the pavements around the school because of the danger for pedestrians - especially those with children in pushchairs – and other road users.

In Emersons Green, which already has 20mph limits outside its two primary schools, calls have been made for more signs reminding drivers of the restriction.
