School community in shock after head teacher admits voyeur charges

ASHLEY Yates,  head teacher of The Tynings School, is  facing a jail sentence after admitting using a spy pen to film children and staff in the toilet.

Yates is due in crown court for sentencing on August 9. He pleaded guilty on July 19 to three separate counts of making indecent images of children and two of voyeurism and was remanded in custody.

The police investigation is continuing and further additional adult victims have been identified, parents have been told.

Yates, 45, from Filton, has been at the school for eight years and news of his arrest  at the end of June shocked staff, parents, governors and children.

He was  suspended from his post. Deputy Angela Berger was appointed acting head and Simon Botten, head of Blackhorse Primary School, was drafted in to provide support and  has been appointed executive head of the two schools.

In an end-of-year message to families, Mrs Berger said: “Being such a strong team  has helped us get through the extremely challenging situation we have recently had to face, and for that I thank you all.”

Parents of the 320 children at the Staple Hill primary school, which is rated Good by Ofsted,  have been kept up to date with the ongoing investigation by the chair of governors.

South Gloucestershire Council and the police have been working closely with the school. All victims have been contacted and offered support.

An NSPCC spokesman said: “This is a truly shocking case, in which Yates completely and inexplicably abused his position of trust as head teacher of a primary school.

“The appalling offences he has admitted to are a form of child abuse, carried out for his own sexual gratification and will no doubt send shock waves throughout the community.

“We hope all the children affected by these crimes receive help and support as necessary. Abuse can ruin childhoods and have a lasting impact into later life.”
