Slimmers raise over £1,200 for Jack

SLIMMERS in Downend and Staple Hill shed 1,293 lb in six weeks – and raised almost as many pounds for charity.
Members of five Slimming World groups decided to support the Jack Banks Star Tribute Fund as part of their organisation’s Slim for Good initiative earlier this year.
They held events including afternoon tea, low ‘syns’, cake sales, Gromit raffles and book swaps and as a result were able to hand over a cheque for £1,221.49 to Jack’s mum, Paula.
She said: “I was amazed at how many people attending those groups knew or had heard about Jack so thank you to Anna Marie and all her groups for their support.”
Paula and her family and friends have been campaigning for Jack’s fund, part of the Wallace & Gromit Grand Appeal to support Bristol Children’s Hospital, since his death in 2008 at the age of nine.
Jack was treated at the hospital and Paula’s aim is to raise £100,000 to fund a playroom and conservatory in his memory.
Many people in the Downend area have backed her efforts. One of the most recent events was a clairvoyant evening, which raised £987. A pop-stars themed fancy dress night is planned for Friday October 17.
The newly-formed Downend Women’s Institute has chosen Jack’s Fund as its charity for the year and Osborne Clarke in Bristol has named it as its charity until 2016.
Teams of runners from Osborne Clarke and from Team Jack – 11 in each - took part in the Bristol 10k on May 4, with other supporters acting as marshalls.
Paula thanked everyone for their support at the run, which took place in wet and windy conditions.
“The crowds kept us going. I felt emotional as I crossed the finish line. All I could think about was Jack and the reason why I take on such challenges,” she said.
Jack’s fund is currently at just under £80,000. To donate, or to find out more, visit www.justgiving.com/jackbanks. Osborne Clarke has its own donation page at www.justgiving.com/ocbristol.
If anyone would like to organise an event for Jack’s fund, you can contact Paula via Downend Voice.
People can also support the fund by taking part in one of The Grand Appeal’s main events, such as skydiving, white water rafting, or running the Bath or Bristol half marathons or the London marathon.
