Successful season for Downend and Fishponds Lawn Tennis club

Published on: 28 Aug 2013

DOWNEND & Fishponds Lawn Tennis Club had a successful Summer League for both Men’s and Ladies teams and is now halfway through the Late Summer Mixed League.

The 1st and 3rd Teams are doing well, with the 1sts having won all their matches so far and the 3rds all but one and both teams are top of their divisions. The 2nd team haven’t been quite so successful and are hoping for more wins in the second half of the season.

Fantastic weather contributed to the success and enjoyment of the summer barbecue in July. Almost 100 people turned out for an afternoon of mini-tennis, speed serves and generally having a good time. Juniors Finlay and Mackenzie Kitching, and Alice and Ben Brown, raised over £100 between them on their sweet and cake stalls as part of the Junior (Fund-raising) Challenge.

Junior Maria Budin is being very successful in European competitions and is ranked 92nd in Europe for U14 girls age group.

During the summer holidays the club ran Tennis Fun Days for five to 11year-olds

The courts are about to be cleaned again in preparation for the autumn coaching and later the

Winter Leagues where the club will be entering both Adult (mixed) and Junior teams.

This term’s Saturday coaching starts on September 7 and mid-week coaching begins in the week of Monday September 9. New members are always welcome. Contact the club on, website or on Facebook.
