Susie getting attention for her music

Published on: 29 Dec 2015

A DOWNEND schoolgirl is making the music industry sit-up and take notice despite only having picked up a ukulele a year ago!
Susie Dobson is just 17-years old, but has already featured at Downend Folk Club, Bristol Folk House and in a live session on Bradley Stoke FM, whilst her YouTube videos have gained some serious attention.
Susie’s debut came at the local folk club, while in December she opened a double-header at The Folk House for Hattie Briggs and Said The Maiden, the highlight of her career to date.
And 2016 promises to be a big year for the youngster, who is a pupil as St Mary Redcliffe andTemple School in Bristol. She has appearances already lined-up at Downend Folk Club, where she will be supporting the acclaimed new-folk duo Gilmore & Roberts, and, perhaps most notably, at Bristol Folk Festival in May with her newly-formed trio, which includes Joe Futak on guitar and Amy Reynolds on fiddle.
All this for a girl who, despite being around music for her whole life (mum Anita is the singer in local folk group Road Not Taken) only started taking it all seriously a year or so ago.
Music wasn’t always a passion for Susie: “Having originally been dragged along to singing lessons and the school ukulele orchestra, I’m now glad I was,” she said.
“I’ve developed a love of performing, taking inspiration from contemporary folk and acoustic artists like The Staves and Passenger, as well as the more traditional artists like Kate Rusby.”
Susie is taking a gap-year after completing her A-levels, and hopes to use it to build up her reputation even further.
“It’s been a bit of a whirlwind,” said Susie.
“A year ago I would have had no idea that this was going to happen, but the YouTube videos showed that people liked what I was doing, so I’m going to do as many gigs as possible and take it from there.”
Susie is keen to play as many local events as possible. To book Susie for your event, please contact her manager Ant Miles at Fancourt Music on 07837 881941 or Meanwhile, you can find Susie on Facebook at or on Twitter at
