Teenagers head to Tanzania

A TEAM of young people who are heading out to Tanzania this summer to work as volunteers are inviting families Downend to a fun night out where they can find out more about their plans.
A total of 16 teenagers from the youth group at Christ Church, Downend will be travelling to Iringa in central Tanzania to work with a range of charitable organisations.
They hope people will turn up to support a grand auction they have organised where, as well as great prizes up for grabs, they will talk about their forthcoming trip.
The group, who are known as the Bristol-Tanzania 2015 Youth Team, will be volunteering with the charity FISCH - Future for Iringa Street Children.
The team will help provide first aid teaching, games, activities and sports coaching.
Youth leader Gary Smart said the teenagers will also work with an organisation called Neema Crafts, which trains disabled people in handicrafts.
He said: “By teaching people with disabilities a skill, Neema Crafts empowers the most marginalized people in Tanzanian society, and in so doing, works to reverse traditional stereotypes and prejudices.
“There’s a great stigma attached to having a disability in Tanzania, and the centre provides dignity and hope for many people who previously relied on street begging or were hidden away at home. As well as volunteering within the project itself, the team will be helping with building and decorating projects.”
Gary said the auction promises to be a fun night out for all the family: “The auction provides a great chance to bid for exclusive items and experiences donated by local and national businesses and services.
“The youth team will also be offering an exciting auction of promises and it will be a chance to find out what the team will be doing in Tanzania.”
The Grand Family Auction takes place on Saturday March 14 at 7pm in North Street Hall.
Admission is free and food and drink will be available. Auction items include family tickets for attractions such as the Eden Project, Legoland and @Bristol.
