Theatre treat for nursing hero Kristian

Life saved

A NURSING graduate from UWE has been treated to a night out by the family of a woman whose life he saved while at the theatre.

Kristian Keyte was invited on an evening out by the family of Judith Mansfield, who went into cardiac arrest in the audience shortly before the start of a show at the Bristol Hippodrome earlier this year.

They revisited the scene where quick-thinking Kristian performed CPR on the fellow theatre-goer when they returned to the venue to watch Sister Act.

Kristian received a standing ovation from the audience after the successful resuscitation before the start of musical The Bodyguard, starring Alexandra Burke, in January.

He rushed over to Judith, 71, from his seat a few rows behind before helping lift her on to the auditorium floor. He performed CPR on the pensioner for several minutes and worked with a St John Ambulance paramedic to restore her pulse and breathing ahead of the arrival of an ambulance crew.

Kristian has since become great friends with Judith’s family and with Alexandra Burke, who also plays the lead in Sister Act.

He said: “It’s so nice to be thanked in this way. I just happened to be there at the right time and it’s amazing what a difference it made that I was able to perform emergency CPR.

“Nurses don’t get thanked enough today so it’s really lovely that the family are showing their appreciation in this way.”

Judith said: “I feel completely recovered now and it’s all thanks to Kristian’s quick-thinking action.”

Alexandra Burke, along with the rest of the cast and the crew of The Bodyguard, was impressed with Kristian’s actions.

When asked about the event, she said: “On that night I was very much in the wings and there is no doubt that Kristian was the real star of the show.”

Kristian is due to graduate from UWE Bristol in Adult Nursing in November.

He said: " I am now working at Weston Hospital where I did some placement work whilst I was studying I actually work alongside Judith’s daughter, Beverley Bishop.”
