Will you pay up to keep football, cricket and fun?

NO more football or cricket at King George V or Badminton Road playing fields – unthinkable?
If that’s your view, the Friends of the park are calling for your urgent support.
South Gloucestershire Council wants to stop maintaining the Downend pitches from April next year and is seeking a local group to take it on.
The council says that 12 football teams and two cricket teams use the fields. They are:
Fishponds Old Boys 1st
Fishponds Old Boys 2nd
Fishponds Old Boys 3rd
Downend Baptist FC
AFC Mangotsfield U15 Girls
AFC Mangotsfield U16 Eagles Boys
Downend Saints U12 A Boys
Downend Saints U12 B Boys
Downend Saints U15 A Boys
Downend Saints U15 B Boys
Downend Saints U13 Girls
Bristol Lions CC
The cost of grass cutting, pitch marking, litter clearing and so on is put at £25,940 a year. It is unlikely that any one team or club, or the Friends, would be able to take on the running of the whole site.
The Friends group says the best option would be for Downend & Bromley Heath Parish Council to take on the management and maintenance of the pitches and the pavilion.
This would involve a small increase in the parish precept, which is collected alongside council tax.
The group’s chair, Fiona Konteh, said: “It would cost just a few pounds a year per resident to ensure that the whole of the playing fields is preserved. It would be great if we could see the facilities, including the pavilion, improved, so that even more groups and individuals could use them.”
The Friends group already runs a Buggy Walks group and a Silver Walkers group and is keen to encourage use of the park by all age groups.
