Youth funding made fairer

A ‘POSTCODE lottery’ that has proved unfair to young people in Downend, Emersons Green and Mangotsfield will be ended.

Under a funding formula agreed last year, South Gloucestershire Council was forking out £22 a head for youth services in Downend and Emersons Green, £25 in Rodway and £26 in Siston – but £45 a head in Westerleigh.

The imbalance came about because of the cost of the Armadillo Youth Cafe in Yate, which comes under the Frome Vale area for council funding.

It requires a £99,000 annual contribution from the local authority, which is more than ten per cent of the total universal youth budget of £877,000.

Councillors of all parties agreed in July to serve notice to withdraw from the youth cafe, which is is jointly funded by Yate Town Council, and re-allocate the savings to all five of the authority’s area committees.
