‘I was so determined not to be a giant-sized bridesmaid’

WHEN Leanne Tucker was asked by her best friend to be bridesmaid she had one thought - there’s no way wearing a plus-size dress following you down the aisle.

WHEN Leanne Tucker was asked by her best friend to be bridesmaid she had one thought - there’s no way wearing a plus-size dress following you down the aisle.

Although delighted to be asked by pal Hayley Stone, Leanne knew all the other bridesmaids were tiny and she was horrified at how she would look in the wedding photos.

The former estate agent sales assistant was fitted for her pretty cream and brown strapless dress - but it didn’t look quite so fetching in size 18

Leanne had piled on the weight throughout her three pregnancies and now she had a year until the wedding in the Dominican Republic to get rid of her excess blubber.

“My bridesmaid dress was a size 18 to 20 and I weighed 13st 1lbs,” said Leanne.

“The other bridesmaids were a size 10, 8 and 6. I just thought, ‘there’s no way I’m being a bridesmaid like that’.”

It took weeks before Leanne even plucked up the courage to join a weight loss group but the thought of being an overweight bridesmaid crippled her with fear.

Eventually Leanne went along to a Slimming World class in Kingswood run by Michelle Neal.

To her amazement she discovered she had found a healthy eating plan she could stick to and the weight steadily fell off.

Leanne embraced food optimising, with the whole family enjoying meals such as spaghetti bolognaise and chips cooked the Slimming World way.

“I made it my mission to lose weight for the wedding. By the time the wedding came along I was a size 12 and 2st 8.5lbs lighter.”

Leanne had to have her bridesmaid dress drastically altered and on the day of the nuptials felt happy and confident.

“I had six inches taken off of each side of the dress. It was such an amazing feeling when I walked down the aisle as a size 12. I didn’t stand out; I just blended in with the other bridesmaids.”

The 34-year-old, who lives in Fishponds, had a nice surprise when she realised she was pregnant with her fourth child.

“When we were away we said we would like another child and the day we got back from the Dominican Republic I found out I was pregnant with my son Preston, who’s now four.”

Leanne, who also has Harrison, 14, Harvey, 11, and six-year-old Lexie, didn’t put all her weight back on following her last pregnancy but did go up to 12st.

Through sheer determination she continued with Slimming World and is now an incredible 9st 13lbs - the lightest she can remember being.

“My husband Adam hasn’t ever known me this light. I feel amazing. When I went shopping I used to have to try on about 15 outfits just to find something to cover my belly. But now, the first thing I try on, I can wear. And that’s made a huge difference to me.”

Leanne feels so fantastic that she’s now on another mission. She is becoming a Slimming World consultant and wants to spread the word to as many people as possible.

“I feel everyone can follow Slimming World. I’ve got four kids and a busy life and if I can do it, everyone can do it. My aim is to get everybody doing Slimming World and feeling as good as I do now.”

Leanne has taken over a Slimming World class at Pomphrey Hill Sports Pavilion in Mangotsfield every Tuesday at 5.30pm and 7.30pm.

“ I love the support I’ve had from my consultant Michelle and going to group each week is an absolute must for me.

“Becoming a consultant just feels like the next natural step. I really want to be able to help members feel how I do - it’s the most amazing feeling knowing I’ve changed my life for the better and knowing that my children are so much healthier as a result. We’ve even started going to the gym together, something I’d never have had the confidence to do before.”
