'Also Rans' run off with coveted quiz title

There was scarcely room to move at the multi media quiz night at Christ Church Parish Hall,  with 140 quizzers shoehorned in for one of Quizmeister Richard Lovelock’s famous evenings.

Our team felt we were unlikely to set the world ablaze, but we would have a go.  There was safety in numbers as you wouldn’t stand out if you found the answers hard to come by (we did); but the number of hopeful teams and sharp minds meant it was tough to succeed. (We didn’t.)

Richard’s quiz style included lots of quirky facts, frustratingly familiar but hard to pinpoint song lyrics (we couldn’t) and the added bonus of extra points if you correctly predicted your final score.  (We didn’t.) All the questions were projected on screen, along with music clips and lots of little “extras” that made the whole evening a fun experience.

The quiz on Saturday March 4 was in aid of Christ Church Youth “Team India,” who will be heading out in August to work with an amazing Christian orphanage called Haven Home in a town called Vizianagaram, but also with rural village projects in the Andhra Pradesh province.

But after an evening of community fun, to one team only could the spoils be presented. As you’ve guessed, it wasn’t us. The “Also Rans” had obviously suffered from a fit of modesty as they named their team, as they came out on top with an impressive score.

In the spirit of support for the young people and the community in India to which they are travelling, the winning team showed that they had heart as well as brains, donating their prize back to the team for their fundraising.

Perhaps the best moment of the night came at the very end, when we were all invited to take a free homemade brownie home with us, from the local company Naughty Brownies, run by Richard’s daughter Laura.  At that point we felt we were all winners!

The evening raised £741.50 for “Team India”
