Anyone for tennis at Lyde Green?
PLANS for a David Lloyd centre on a site between the ring road and Folly Brook at Lyde Green will meet a need for leisure facilities in Emersons Green and Downend, its backers say.
The nearest public facility is Downend Outdoor Sports Centre and the closest David Lloyd Centre is at Westbury-on-Trym, nearly eight miles away.
"David Lloyd have a longstanding interest in the site and are keen to develop the site into the much required and demanded sports facility," the organisation says.
Its proposals include three weather protected tennis courts and a show court, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a multi-purpose sports hall, gym facilities, 245 car parking and 20 cycle parking facilities.
The site is off the Rosary roundabout and because of its proximity to the ring road and to overhead power lines is considered unsuitable for alternative forms of development.
The David Lloyd organisation has worked with council officers to come up what it says are the best possible proposals, although a suggested roof terrace and additional glass to increase natural light were deemed too costly. It says the proposals are an improvement on plans put forward in 2005 and 2010.
The scheme will be considered by the council's planning committee. The public can comment online: find the plans on the South Gloucestershire website with the reference PK18/0692/F
David Lloyd centres, founded by a former GB Davis Cup player, have some 475,000 members across Europe and employ more than 6,000 people, including an expert health and fitness team of over 1,800 professionals alongside more than 400 tennis coaches.
In the UK, it has 800 tennis courts, 180 badminton courts and 140 squash courts, and 150 swimming pools.
