Boxers get off to a great start

March 25 2020

THREE young Downend Boxing Club members have made impressive debut performances.
Harvey Drake and Solomon Jacobs both won their bouts in matches in Torrington, Devon on March 7, while Elijah ‘Magic’ Sanchez had his first fight in Dorset at the age of 10.
Harvey Drake, 15, displayed quick footwork and a bewildering range of shots to take a unanimous points decision against Torrington's Joe Whittick.
Next up was 16-year-old Sol, who faced Lucas Love of Torrington.
After a nervous start, he lost the first and second rounds. During the break, head coach Craig Turner advised Sol that he was behind, and the determined Bristolian flew from the corner, catching the Devon boxer with a strong right hand, prompting a protection count and subsequent stoppage from the referee and an emphatic win for Downend.
Elijah made his debut at the Dorset show, where his 12-year-old brother La-Mech and team mate Jay Holloway, 15, were taking part in their third and 13th bouts respectively.
Elijah first came to the gym aged eight and showed a natural flair for the sport, to the point that Craig started calling him 'Magic' and the name has stuck, to the point that the young boxer now introduces him self as Magic.
Craig said: “He was waiting for so long to become old enough to compete, but kept training hard alongside his brother and at long last the moment arrived.”
Magic faced Yeovil's Moken Mills, also making his debut. Both boxers provided an appreciative audience with a great exhibition of technical boxing, displaying how hard they have worked to reach this point.
The close decision went to the classy Yeovil lad, but Magic was delighted with his performance and can't wait for his next outing.
La-Mech displayed some fantastic slick boxing against Joe Jeff of Portland, making his tough opponent miss and countering to take the judges’ decision and make it two wins from three outings.
Middlesbrough's Faisal Hussain gave Jay all the problems he could handle but at the end of three gruelling rounds, the decision came back to Bristol.
Eloise Edwards and Alexa Smith have progressed to the Quarter finals of the National Junior championships, while Bailey Phillips and Callum Smith are awaiting their opening appearances the Elite National championships.
Unfortunately the Championships, like other sporting events, have been cancelled and the club is shut until further notice.
