LEAVE the car at home – and walk, cycle or scoot to school.

That was the message to families when Mangotsfield Church of England VC Primary School held a Car Free Day at the end of the summer school.

Those that had to drive were asked to park a short distance away and complete the journey on foot. Rewards including stickers, pencils and rubbers were handed out to every child taking part.

Vicky Moore, active travel to schools officer for South Gloucestershire, said: “Car Free Days offer a great opportunity to tackle the problem of congestion at the school gates. They also encourage pupils to adopt more active ways to travel, which are not only healthier but can also be good fun.”

Emma Tilley, school business manager at Mangotsfield Primary, said: “The roads were noticeably quieter around the school which made for a much more pleasant journey. It was lovely to see the amount of children and parents walking in on that morning. It was a great start to the day!”

The car free day was supported by a walking bus that the school organised to make walking to school a more realistic option for some families.

Vicky is working with the school as part of a sustainable transport project run in partnership with the charity Sustrans.
