So next time you go shopping, why not pop an extra packet of biscuits or tin of rice pudding into your trolley to help those in need?

It’s not only eats that are required either – shampoo, washing powder tablets and toiletries are also needed.

Gifts of food can be taken to the Resound church in Blackhorse Road during the working week. Many other churches in the area are also collecting food, which is taken to a warehouse in Yate for storage.

Organisers would welcome donations of money. Cheques can be made out to Resound Trust and should be clearly marked Food Bank on the back.

The food bank is being launched in September at Resound and will be open fortnightly on Friday mornings to distribute emergency food to people from the area who are experiencing hardship.

Recipients are referred to the food bank by professionals such as doctors and schools and are given vouchers to exchange for supplies.

Any organisation that would like to be a voucher holder should contact Claire Collins at Resound clairec@resoundbristol.co.uk

A team of volunteers has been recruited through churches – although you do not have to be a member of a congregation or a believer to be involved.

There are many roles for volunteers, from “front of house” at the food bank sessions to behind the scenes work collecting, weighing, dating, sorting, stacking and packing supplies. Fund-raisers and people to help with supermarket collections will also be needed.
