MARTIAL Arts duo Ellis Riley and Dean Turner, from Staple Hill, have been identified as elite sporting performers.

The pair, who train at the Elite Chung Do Kwan Black Belt Academy in Page Park, were invited to a training camp with former GB Olympic Taekwondo coach and world silver medallist John Wright Diaz and former Olympian Seelan Rengasamy. Current world No1 Aaron Cook was also there.

Dean recently won a bronze medal for Team Taekwondo England in the Children's World Championship in Germany and Ellis has won medals representing both England and Jamaica (through his father's nationality) in international events.

Coach Andy Davies said: "Everyone at our Staple Hill Academy is really proud of the success of Ellis and Dean and all they have achieved. We have several more up and coming athletes who are starting to make an impact at various competitions. It is a tribute to all the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in our academy that we have gateways for those who are more competitively oriented."

Ellis and Dean were among five academy members who won medals at the English Open Taekwondo Championships on Sunday June 1.

The others were Gabriel Lee, Leo Lee and William Mickleburgh.

Four club members were tournament officials: Andy Davies, Dave Clarke, Paul Hollier and Matt Davies. They received commendation awards for their outstandingt refereeing.

Ellis has now been selected to compete as part of an international squad in the International Chung Do Kwan Taekwondo Championships in Indianapolis in the USA in November. The club has launched a sponsorship campaign to raise funds for Ellis to compete, as - like many top athletes - he is completely self-funded. Andy said: "We are pleased that our members continue to rank among the best in the country and we take pride in the high calibre of training that we are able to provide both at a competitor level and in training national referees and judges."
