A FAMILY business will close in May after nearly six years of trading in Downend.

Fabrics Plus set up home in Badminton Road after 26 years in its previous location in Keynsham.

A year-long search to find a buyer for the fabrics and haberdashery business proved fruitless, forcing owner Brigitte Parker to announce the last day of trading will be on May 19.

Fabrics Plus will however continue to have an online presence at www.fabricsplus.co.uk

The shop employs eight part-time members of staff, one of whom has worked for the business for 28 years.

Mrs Parker, who has three daughters who have all worked in the business, blamed the harsh economic climate on the shop's closure and said the landlord would now be seeking a new leaseholder.

Back in November the landlord applied for permission for a change of use from retail to a restaurant or cafe but the application has recently been rejected by South Gloucestershire Council.

Mrs Parker said it will be a wrench to leave Downend.

"I'm very upset and so are my staff. It's become a way of life and I've done it for the last 30 years. It becomes a part of you. My staff and myself will miss working here and the community of Downend."

Fabrics Plus was originally based at The Centre in Keynsham but after 26 years moved to a former mobility shop in Downend due to the renovation of the town centre.
